Privacy policy
Last updated July 29, 2026
This privacy policy explains how Find My Captain (“Find My Captain,” “we,” “us”) collects, uses, and shares information when you use our website and services (the “Service”) — a marketplace that connects vessel owners with captains, crew, and service providers. By using the Service, you agree to this policy.
Information we collect
- Account details — your name, email address, and role (owner, captain, crew, or service provider).
- Mobile number — if you choose to add and verify one for text-message updates.
- Profile and listing details — for captains and service providers: hailing port, services, sea time, licenses, and credentials you provide.
- Vessel details — information owners add about their boats.
- Booking and message activity — requests, bookings, and messages you exchange with other users on the Service.
- Technical data — device, browser, and usage information collected automatically to keep the Service secure and working, including the analytics cookies described below.
How we use information
- To provide and operate the marketplace — matching owners with captains, crew, and service providers, and handling bookings and messages.
- To send notifications you’ve asked for about your bookings and account.
- To verify identity, licenses, and credentials, and to support trust and safety.
- To secure the Service, prevent abuse, and meet legal obligations.
Cookies and analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how the Service is used — which pages people visit, how they found us, and where they run aground. It sets cookies in your browser and collects your approximate location (derived from your IP address), your device and browser type, the pages you view, and the site that referred you.
We use this only to improve the Service. We do not sell it, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not send Google your name, email address, or anything else that identifies you directly.
You can opt out using Google’s browser add-on, or block cookies in your browser settings — the Service works either way. Google describes how it handles this data at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
SMS and text-message notifications
If you add and verify a mobile number and turn on SMS for a notification category, we send you text messages through our messaging provider, Twilio.
- What we send: transactional updates about your bookings and account — for example, when a captain accepts, declines, or changes a trip. We do not send marketing or promotional text messages.
- Consent: SMS is strictly opt-in. You provide consent by verifying your mobile number with a one-time code and enabling SMS for a category in your Communications settings. We never enable it for you.
- Message frequency: varies based on your account activity — messages are sent in response to events like a booking update, so there is no fixed schedule.
- Rates: message and data rates may apply, depending on your mobile carrier and plan.
- Opting out: reply STOP to any message to stop all texts, or remove your number / turn off SMS at any time in your Communications settings. Reply HELP for help.
- No sharing of mobile data: we do not sell your information, and no mobile information or SMS opt-in data is shared with third parties or affiliates for their marketing or promotional purposes. Your number is shared only with the messaging provider that delivers the texts you requested.
How we share information
We share information only as needed to run the Service:
- With other users — when you book or message, the other party to that booking sees the details necessary to carry it out.
- With service providers (subprocessors) — companies that help us operate, such as our hosting and database provider, payment processor, email provider, SMS provider, and analytics provider. They may only use the data to provide their service to us.
- For legal reasons — when required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the Service.
We do not sell your personal information.
Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations. You can ask us to delete your account and associated data.
Your choices and rights
- Access, update, or correct your account information in your account settings.
- Manage or remove your mobile number and notification preferences in Communications settings.
- Request a copy or deletion of your personal data by contacting us.
Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, so we can’t guarantee absolute security.
Children
The Service is for adults. It isn’t directed to anyone under 18, and we don’t knowingly collect their information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll revise the “last updated” date above, and significant changes will be communicated through the Service.
